I have been reading about the Dell 24” and it seems like it has a lot more features than the Apple 23“. It can move up and down, swivel, and it has more inputs and even rotate to a portrait mode. Right now a rep at Dell says he can sell it to me for $999, and I can get the Apple 23″ for $1300 (student discount).

The Apple has a better dot pitch .258 vs. Dell’s .27, does that really make a difference? I’m not a gamer, I just want to edit video so does the Apple having 16 ms response time compared to the Dell’s 12 ms? The Apple has a 400:1 contrast ratio and the Dell has 1000:1, does all this matter, or is it nitpicking? I also keep hearing about the pink tint the 23″ has, is that a myth?

I would much rather have the Apple because I’m buying a G5 and it would be nice to have them match. I’m a bit of a purist, but then again, the Dell has all those inputs, including a 9-1 card reader, PIP, PBP I mean, is there really any reason to buy the Apple display other than the aesthetic/snob factor and a couple fire wire (albeit 400) ports? Can someone give me a reason not to buy the Dell?

Also, I was talking to my old boss today about my monitor dillema, he has the older 23” and he loves it, but her mentioned something very alarming. Is it true that Apple is switching to a completely different platform? Will my G5 be a paperweight in 18 months?

Also, I’m going to be working with another editor on the same project. If I copy all of his media via an external drive and then work on it on my machine, can I just export and EDL (edit list) and email it to him and then will his machine import the EDL and have my version exactly? If not, how can we work on the same project living an hour and half a way, he does come into the city twice a week and we could do a handoff of sorts? What would be the best way to share files? I could work in low res and burn a dual DVD at 8.4 gigs. Will that work?

As you can see I’m a bit in the dark and not up to date with all the current editing tech info. I switched careers, but I really want to get back into editing, but as you can see, I like to do my research. Any thoughts on the above babble?

Well, I do have a 19″ CRT sitting in the closet, I could use that for the left monitor and dig deep and get the 23″ for my main. Then get another 23″ down the road. But are there other alternatives to the actual Apple monitors? I mean there has to be a less expensive option out there with comprable quality. Or do the Apple monitors just blow everything else out of the water?

I have about a $1000 left of Sony credit and they have this monitor available for $799 after the rebate. Here is the link I would rather not go out of pocket, I have about $2500 in Apple credit so I’m going to use that to buy the G5. But if I did want to go out of pocket on the monitor and just get one large widescreen, what are my alternatives to the Apple displays?

    Thanks,

    Luke
